Trivia 1 *** something about food

* What is a common between "Babaroa" and "Sausage".

Bavarois is a English word which means "Babaroa" for Japanese.

This word originally came from French

(, so that you don't pronounce "i" and "s" which are the last 2 characters of the word.)

And there is another word for bavarois in English

, which is "Bavarian cream" and is a more popular word than "Bavarois".

In this word , Bavarian means people who live in Bavaria.

So , where Bavaria is ?

Bavaria is the name of a district in Germany.

You might have not heard this name ever , as I haven't .

But actually in Japan , Bavaria is one of the most famous name of a German district

somehow ..... as the name of a sausage product.

The way to pronaunce "Bavaria" is "Baierun" in Japanese.

Now you should see that "Babaroa" and "Baierun" is the same word originally.

* Why the best "Tonkatsu" must be fried to be golden.

Maybe you know that the word Katsu came from the French (and English also) word cutlet.

Cutlet was invented in France at the beginning of the Renaissance.

It had been a food for rich people mainly featuring calves or lambs.

As it's still seen in Japan , they spreaded meat as thin as they could before frying it.

So what was it deep-fried with ?

Nowdays all over the world , in France or Japan

, they are deep fried with being covered by bread crumbs.

However they used be covered by real gold powders at the beginning of its history.

So it could be a status for rich people.

But soon the rich people ( or France inself ) faced a shortage of gold powders.

Therefore the goverment banned using gold powders for food.

So French people began to use bread crumbs imitating and instead of real gold.

And this is the reason why you have to fry it to be golden.

* English never makes sense.

Do you know the food called "minced meat pie" ?

The word minced has been a Japanese word as "Minchi".

So it must be easy for you to imagine what "minced meat pie" is.

It might be as same as "meat pie" simply.

But I'm afraid that it's wrong.

Minced meat pie is a British traditinal food.

And its content "used to" include meat.

The ingredients originally consited of ground beef , dried fruits and something else.

But at the certain time of its history , ground beef was completely eliminated from its recipe.

And somehow the name has never been changed.

Nowadays , it means dried fruits pie merely.

You shouldn't assume it as a main dish , when you order "minced meat pie".
