Japanese Matinee Idol Yutaka Take Arrives At Hollywood Park

日本のマチネー(昼間興行)アイドル、武豊がハリウッドパークに到着

In Japan, where attendance at major racetracks often exceeds 150,000,
jockey Yutaka Take is one of the nation's most popular sports figures.

競馬の主要レースにおける入場者数が15万人を超えることも珍しくない日本では
武豊騎手は国でも最高の人気を誇るスポーツスターの一人である。

His celebrity status is such that his marriage was broadcast live on
national television. Japanese journalists compare Take's popularity
in Japan with Michael Jordan's in the United States.

彼の名声の度合いは、彼の結婚式が国営テレビ(NHK?)で放映されたことからも分かる。
日本のジャーナリスト達は彼の人気をアメリカにおけるマイケルジョーダンのそれと比較している。

It all stems from his boyish good looks and his spectacular success
in the saddle. Take has been the leading rider in Japan ten times,
including every year since 1992. At age 31, he already ranks fourth
all-time in Japanese racing history with 1,820 wins.

この名声は全て彼のボーイッシュでハンサムな顔立ちと、騎手としての瞠目の
活躍によるものである。彼は1992年からの連続記録を含め、これまで10度、日本のリーディング
ジョッキーに輝き、年齢31歳にして、すでに日本の歴代４位にあたる1820勝を挙げている。

So why then, with all of that going on in Japan, has Take decided to
base himself in Southern California?

なぜ、日本におけるこれらの実績を以ってして、彼は南カリフォルニアを本拠に
することを決意したのだろう？

"This is not something that came out of the blue," Take said through
his interpreter, Mikki Tsuge. "I've thought about this for ten years.
The first time I came to America was in 1989, when I rode a race at
Arlington Park. I remember thinking that if I ever get the chance,
I would like to try it for at least a year."

武は通訳Mikki Tsuge氏を通じてこう語った。「これは別に突然降って湧いたものではありません。
このことについては１０年間考えつづけてきました。初めてアメリカに来たのが1989年で、
アーリントンパーク競馬場でレースに乗りました。もしチャンスがあれば最低でも１年は

Take has ridden sporadically outside of Japan, including stops in France,
Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Dubai, Germany, England and the United States.

武はこれまでフランス、ニュージーランド、香港、ドバイ、ドイツ、イギリスそして米国と
日本以外でときおり騎乗してきた経験を持つ。

But this is different. Take said his plan is to ride in Southern California
for a minimum of one year. He's hired Nick Cosato to work as his agent.

しかし今回は少し異なる。武は南カリフォルニアでの彼の騎乗計画は最低でも１年になる、
と語っている。彼はNick Cosatoを彼の専属エージェントとして雇っている。

If there is a rap against Japanese jockeys it is that they lack the
aggressiveness of their North American counterparts. Take disputes that
notion, but he also understands that horsemen will be placing his rides
here under a microscope.

比較して積極性に欠ける点である。武はこの意見に対して異論を唱えている一方で

"In recent years, Japanese jockeys have incorporated the American style,
" Take said. "We have watched them, and we see that sometimes that they
are aggressive. I have always admired their ability to get good position.
A lot of the jockeys in Japan are beginning to copy the (American) style."

武は言う。「最近では日本の騎手たちはアメリカのスタイルを取り入れて来ています。
我々は彼らを観察してきたし、時には彼らが積極的になることも知っています。

Take added that his coming to America doesn't mean he has nothing left to
conquer in Japan. The native of Kyoto said he will return to his native land,
he just isn't sure when.

彼は、日本に成し遂げるべきことが何も残っていないと言うわけではない、とつけ加えた。
京都生まれの彼は、いつかは分からないだけで、生まれた国にはいずれ帰るつもりである。

"I'm thinking I will ride here one year minimum," he said. "If people like
the way I ride, maybe I'll stay longer. I have accomplished many things,
but being a jockey is still a learning process.

「ここでは最低一年は乗るつもりです」彼は言う。「もし皆さんが私の乗り方を
気に入ってくれたら、恐らく長くいることになるでしょう。これまで多くのことを

"My ambition is to compete. I'm a competitive person, and the reason I have
chosen to ride in California is because it is very competitive. The jockeys
here are very good."

Take was scheduled to ride Way Too Crafty for trainer Wesley Ward in
the fourth race Thursday. He has no mounts Friday evening but is named on three
horses Saturday.

武は木曜日の第４レースにWesley Ward師の管理馬Way to Craftyに騎乗予定になっている。
金曜の夕方のレースには騎乗予定は無いが、土曜には3頭の馬に指名を受けている
